Castle Rising - North Norfolk
Description
Dating way back to 1138 this majestic castle has one of the largest preserved keeps in the British Isles. Queen Isabella took residence here in the 14th century. It is alleged she ordered the murder of Edward II when she struck up an extramarital affair. Queen Isabella’s reign with her lover Roger Mortimer soon crumbled as they were unpopular with the people. And in 1330 Queen Isabella’s son Edward III executed Mortimer and took back control. He spared his mother who continued to live at the castle until her death in 1358. It is said she wasn’t happy in later life and became mad and mentally unstable with loneliness and grieve. She never forgave her son for the killing of her lover. Queen Isabella is said to haunt the castle and disembodied screams have been heard. Her restless spirit has supposedly been wandering the corridors of the upper floors ever since she passed away many centuries ago.
